It's baffling how some people consider art classes funded by the NDIS a waste. As someone who has passionately taught art to individuals of all abilities in Wangaratta for over four years, I vehemently disagree. I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of art therapy. It provides my clients with a courageous outlet to express themselves and breathes new life into their daily existence.
Art therapy and supported art classes, accessible within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), are not just frivolous activities. They are essential tools that improve well-being and quality of life for individuals with disabilities. This article aims to highlight the undeniable benefits and transformative potential of these art classes.
The Transformative Story of Will
Consider the story of Will, a young NDIS participant with autism who is non-verbal. His mother, Raquel, chose Interact Australia to provide his supports. “We chose Interact Australia to provide Will’s supports and he’s coming along in leaps and bounds,” Raquel said. Will attends the Arts Project twice a week—a studio that supports artists with intellectual disabilities, promotes their work, and advocates for their inclusion in contemporary art practice. “It’s been really good for him to explore and develop as an artist, and it has been really rewarding to see his artwork exhibited regularly in various exhibitions.”
I felt the need to include Will's story in this blog because it exemplifies the profound impact that art classes funded by the NDIS can have on individuals with disabilities. His journey shows how art therapy can lead to personal growth, community engagement, and greater self-expression, which are often underestimated by critics of NDIS-funded art programs.
Why Art Therapy Matters
Art therapy is not just a fun pastime; it's a vital therapeutic approach. It allows individuals to express themselves through painting, drawing, sculpture, and more. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which relies heavily on verbal communication, art therapy offers an alternative means of expression, enabling individuals to tap into their inner creativity and explore emotions, thoughts, and experiences non-verbally.
Emotional Regulation and Coping Skills
Art therapy provides a safe space for individuals to process emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Through creative expression, participants can explore and release pent-up feelings, reducing stress and anxiety.
Enhanced Communication
For individuals with disabilities affecting verbal communication, such as autism spectrum disorder or speech impairments, art therapy is invaluable. It becomes a universal language, allowing participants to communicate thoughts and emotions that might be difficult to articulate verbally.
Self-Exploration and Identity Development
Engaging in art-making fosters self-discovery and a deeper understanding of one's identity. Through exploring colors, shapes, and symbols, individuals can gain insight into their inner world, strengths, and challenges, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth.
Social Connection and Community Engagement
Art therapy often takes place in group settings, providing opportunities for individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences. Group activities promote social interaction, collaboration, and a sense of belonging, fostering meaningful relationships and support networks within the NDIS community.
Improved Motor Skills and Physical Rehabilitation
For individuals with physical disabilities, art therapy can aid in improving fine motor skills and coordination. Activities like painting, drawing, or sculpting help strengthen hand-eye coordination and dexterity, contributing to physical rehabilitation and functional independencArt Therapy: A Pathway to Transformation

As we advocate for the inclusion of art therapy within disability support services, let’s celebrate its profound impact on individuals, families, and communities across the NDIS.
